Vybz Kartel, born Adidja Azim Palmer in Jamaica, grew up in the Waterford community of Portmore. Raised in a working-class environment, he developed an early interest in writing lyrics and performing in local talent competitions, experiences that shaped the sharp lyrical style that later defined his career.
He began recording in the early 1990s under the name Adi Banton before adopting the stage name Vybz Kartel. His breakthrough came in the late 1990s and early 2000s through collaborations with leading Jamaican producers and sound systems. Albums such as “Up 2 Di Time” (2003) and “More Up 2 Di Time” (2004) established him as a major force in dancehall. He later expanded his catalog with “Kingston Story” (2011), “Viking (Vybz Is King)” (2015), and “Of Dons & Divas” (2020).
Kartel became internationally known through songs including “Clarks,” “Fever,” “Summertime,” “Dancehall Hero,” “Romping Shop,” “Turn & Wine,” and “Colouring This Life.” His work combined dancehall rhythms with vivid storytelling, street commentary, and a distinctive vocal delivery that influenced a new generation of Jamaican artists.
Throughout his career, he collaborated with performers such as Spice, Popcaan, Tommy Lee Sparta, Bounty Killer, Mavado, Rihanna, Major Lazer, and Missy Elliott. He also played a significant mentoring role through the Portmore Empire collective, which became an important platform for emerging dancehall talent.
Kartel’s commercial success includes multiple charting releases in Jamaica and internationally, while his cultural influence extends far beyond sales figures. His slang, fashion, entrepreneurial ventures, and musical innovations have had a lasting impact on Jamaican popular culture and on dancehall scenes across the Caribbean, North America, Europe, and Africa.
In 2014, he was convicted in the murder case of Clive “Lizard” Williams and sentenced to life imprisonment. After years of legal appeals, the conviction was overturned in 2024, leading to his release from custody. Since returning to public life, Vybz Kartel has resumed recording, performing, and announcing new projects and international appearances. Vybz Kartel remains one of the most influential and closely watched figures in contemporary dancehall music.
